Two recent studies have shown that "cheap talk" is an effective means of eliminating positive hypothetical bias in experimental and field-auction settings. We further investigate the ability of cheap talk to mitigate positive hypothetical bias in a CVM phone survey administered to over 4,000 households. Positive hypothetical bias is detected in our data by contrasting revealed and stated preference information. However, a short, neutral cheap-talk script appears to exacerbate rather than mitigate the bias. Based on this and mixed evidence from earlier studies, we suggest caution in using cheap talk as an ex ante control for hypothetical bias. |

This report summarizes the results of the North Dakota Land Valuation Model using a capitalization rate of 9.5 percent. The 2003 North Dakota Legislature amended the statute that defines the capitalization rate to be used in this analysis. This legislative change places a minimum of 9.5 percent for the capitalization rate if the calculated value falls below this level. For 2003, the capitalization rate formula yielded a rate of 8.53 percent, thus the minimum of 9.5 percent was used. This model is used annually to estimate average land values by county, based on the value of production from the land. The county land values developed from this procedure form the basis for the 2003 valuation of agricultural land for real estate tax assessment. The average... |

This paper is a summary of a project that compared the relative profitability of existing, emerging and prospective agroforestry systems with profitability of conventional agricultural land uses in the cropping zones of Western Australia and New South Wales. The project explored the economic boundary conditions under which several promising agroforestry systems may be viable in the lower rainfall zones. Partial budgeting and discounted cash flow techniques were used to conduct the comparative analysis of alternative land use scenarios. The profitability, cash flows and debt associated with each of the scenario are reported. The analysis underpinning this research provides estimates of the economic value of the temporal and spatial interaction effects of... |

This paper is part of a series of reports of the activities conducted under a grant from the Fund for Rural America, U.S. Department of Agriculture. Funds for the grant entitled "Enhancing Rural Economies Through Comprehensive Extension, Research & Partnering Approaches Using Multi-County Clusters in Michigan With Application to National Rural Settings" were received by Michigan State University's Department of Agricultural Economics in March, 1998. The major goal of the grant is to increase economic development activity in four clusters of rural counties in Michigan through the utilization of the resources of the Michigan State University Extension Service, Michigan Agricultural Experiment Station, and other resources of Michigan State University.... |

Cocoa is a classic Third World cash crop. It is produced mostly by small, poor farmers in Africa, while its products - chocolate and sun tan oil - are consumed by rich consumers in North America and Europe. A few West African economies are highly dependent on foreign exchange earned from cocoa sales. It has therefore been targeted by Oxfam's Fair Trade initiative, and IITA's Sustainable Tree Crops Program (STCP) is launching an effort of become more aligned with consumer's social preferences. The most obvious dimension to addressing consumer demand for cocoa products is to insure provision of high quality products, which has become problematic since structural adjustment programs have dismantled the African parastatals governing cocoa production and... |

This survey first presents an inventory of fish species in the three studied sites. Altogether 17 fish species were found in Merja Zerga (Morocco), 25 species in Garâat Ichkeul and 16 species in Edku lagoon. Three fish groups live in these brackish lakes : sedentary fish, marine fish and freshwater fish. The second part of the study deals with the production of the different species. This production mainly rests upon Mugilidae and Anguilla in Merja Zerga and Ichkeul, while, in Edku, Tilapia is its principal component. In all these sites fish production seems to be decreasing these last years, because of over-fishing and essentially of the deterioration of the environmental factors, especially the hydrologic ones. |

Using programming methods, the two models of cropping structures suggested by the study were remarkably different. The first model considered water availability levels, while the second tried to optimize its use. As such, some cash crops were excluded from the second model as water extensive users, such as some kinds of fruits. Hence, the second type models expected net revenues and benefit-cost ratios dropped to nearly one-third the corresponding estimates of the first type, and about 10-20% higher than those of the actual cropping structures in average. Accordingly, encouraging farmers to adopt cropping patterns of rational water use would be in vain unless fortified by taxation tools and guidance toward efficient methods of cost reduction and/or yields... |

The formerly neglected wheat production is recovering under policies of economic reform and liberalization. The most effective factors are the continuous price raises and the relatively low production costs which should continue, along with attempts to improve yields and reduce costs, if to avoid imports re-expansion. As for rice, its production expansion potentials are constrained by water limitations. However, the ongoing price increases may motivate attempts to reduce both production costs and post-harvest enormous losses. Exports may be promoted as such, hardly threatening satisfaction of domestic needs, at least in the foreseen future. |

In Niger as in most of semiarid Sub-Saharan Africa the fallow system has become a historic event as a result of increasing population pressure and has not yet been replaced with increased input use due to low product prices. As a result nutrient mining is becoming prevalent and cereals yields declining. So it is necessary to develop marketing and other strategies to increase farmers' incomes from the use of increased inputs for soil fertility especially inorganic fertilizers. In the farm model, two goals (subsistence food storage and harvest income) are first achieved, before maximizing income, in a linear programming framework with various states of nature. This is an alternative way of handling risk based on farmer's actual observed behavior. Hence this... |

This paper analyses the determinants of foreign direct investment (FDI) in the manufacturing sector in Malaysia from eleven countries during the period 1988 to 2000. The empirical results indicate that gross domestic product, lending interest rate, labour productivity, exports to home country and imports from home country significantly influenced the level of FDI inflows into Malaysia. However, exchange rate, exchange rate variation, wage and openness index were not important in influencing FDI. |
